What's New in Core 1.1.6?

by N.A. Larson

We at Children of Kefentse are proud to announce the release of Core Deck 1.1.6! (Bleed files are here) In addition to minor grammatical corrections, this set has been updated to comply with our Rules Wording and Style Guidelines. The Style Guide is a reference to help card designers write rules text that is clear, concise, and consistent. It was developed from careful study of HPG’s cards and errata, and has had input from the TSSSF community as well as HPG themselves. Aside from rules re-wordings, there are a few mechanical changes in this release that affect gameplay:

Derpy Hooves says “Start card”

You might have been house-ruling this already, since Derpy’s power was completely useless with any Start card but Fanfic Author Twilight. With more and more Start cards being by made by fans, we decided that this change would be beneficial.

Iron Will is a Unicorn

This was actually a 1.1.5 change, but since 1.1.4 was the last version to be printed by HPG, few players are aware of this change. The reason for this change is that characters are assigned one of the four in-game races by their physical characteristics, not their abilities (see 2.3.2.3. in the Style Guide). Iron Will may be strong, but he as horns, which makes him a unicorn. This may seem counter-intuitive, but it allows him to be used for the Goal, “It’s Magical: Horns Are Touching.”

Love Poisons Are Optional

This is another 1.1.5 change. There are two advantages to this change. The first is that if a player ends up with Love Poisons being the only Ship cards in their hand, they can still play them with the Pony cards in their hand. The second is that it is much easier to design cards which play Ship cards directly from the deck or discard pile. Previously, cards like Captain Mwai from No-Holds-Barred had to have special rules-wording for dealing with Love Poisons. Now that Love Poisons can be used as normal Ships, this wording is not required.
